The Vikingship
Sail

The Viking sail were no bad construction. Today, we know a lot about the sails despite that only fragments of sails has been found in excavations. So, how can we know how the Vikings constructed them?

Exept for the few fragments found, archeologists have studied the construction and the design of the ships. The details tell us more than one should think. Modern archeological methods reveal much of the forgotten.
Also exprimental archeology done onboard vikingships has verified many questions. The big problem is that we nowdays can construct to good and effective sails. One must never forget that!

  • The basics of the Viking sail?

When you want to construct a sail you have to start by finding the basic facts about the intension of the sail and the ship.

    • What type of ship (Longship, Knarr etc.)?
    • How big is the ship?
    • Where is the point of ballance?
    • What is your intension with your sail?
    • How is the ship constructed (shape, length, width, hight, waterline, position of the mast, cleats and other , rudder and also known fragments from original rigging and sail etc.)?

These questions are very important to awnser just because the fact that no complete sails or riggings has been found from the Viking age. The construction must be done from almost nothing.

As a result of the awnsers you can start the construction by deciding the size of the sail. I will use the construction of the new sail for Sigrid Storråda (constructed by my friends and I in 1998) in the further disscusion.

  • Hur stort skall seglet vara?

We started to look upon the original that Sigrid Storråda were based on, - the Gokstad ship. The ship were exelent preserved and there has been found fragments of the sail. The size of the sail estimated. The position of the yard gallow that holds the yard arm when you do'nt sail is known. Its distance is almoust 11m. If you look at it you can estimate a yard arm of about 11 to 13m, most likely 12m long. This length is fairly unquestioned and also the length we chose. A 12 meter long yard arm gives a sail of 10.5 to 11.5 meters width. We chose a 11m wide sail in the top. We wanted a trappets shaped sail. It have some aerodynamical advantages. We chose a sail with a 12m foot. That means we got a sail with one meter trappets, not so much but enough. We also took a look at the position of the cleats and they supported our decision.

There were much more difficulty deciding the hight of the sail. We wanted a sail of about 100 to 110 sq. meter. We chose to not take notice to that and strikt look apon it from an archeologists perspective. Norwegian experiences sais that the hight-width ratio of 1:1,1 is the best. It would give maximum efficiency from the sail. We must not forget what i said in the prolog. The sail could be too good aerodynamically that the original caracteristics dissapere. I think that the ratio must be lowered and we can also see it in the archeological indicatons. A sail of Norwegian size would be around 13m high and in my meaning over rigged. Archeologically seen it chould have a hight between 6 to 9 metres. We wanted to make a good interpretation and that would mean 8m. To not fall into the trap with too small sail we chosed a 9 meter high sail. You can allways shorten a reef.

This gave us a size of 103.5 sq meters and soo far not a defined mast hight.

The sail had to go through several theoretical strength calculations. We also requested calculations of the ships heeling stability etc. from several experts. It showed that we chosed about the right size. The size is of corse smaller than that of our sister ship Gaia, but it is probably more archeologically correct. One can ask oneself if Gaias 120 sq. metre sail is'nt oversized. But if you take it into consideration that it could be too good, made in the modern way.

The parts of the sail!

  • The sailcloth segelduken.

Vilken segelduk skall man använda?

  • Sewing the sail.

The cloth was delivered in 55cm width. This is also approximatly the size used by the vikings. The gores are then sewn together with straight seam in at least three seams. To remember is that the seam thread must be manifold to not cut the cloth apart. Prefferably four or six dubble thread. Reinforcements must be put in where the preassure is hard for example by the leech at the reef-, the bowline- and sheet cringles and at the tacks. You should also put in reinforcements where the reef line eyelets are and along all of the leech.

  • Reef.

Normaly the sail has four reefs. There are no archeological proof but three or four reefs is reasonable. Top reefs or bottom reefs is allways a question? On found fragments you can see bottom reefs. They are also more usable because you can shorten sail during cruise and not only when the sail is down. To take a top reef is not fun at all when the sea is heavy, that i can promise you. We chosed four reefs, Three bottom reefs and one top reef. This is a normal arrangement.

  • Liket.

Liket tar dessutom upp kraften i halsen. Råbanden skall icke fästas direkt i överliket utan i förstärkta öljetter sittande i förstärkningen omedelbart under liket.

  • Seglets horn

  • The Eyelets.

The eyelets is normaly metal eyelets especially made for natural sail cloth and riveted together. This is not enough. They have to be reinforced with sewing. Normally with three or four dubble thread and sewn with every second stitch longer. This method because that the sail cloth should not be teared apart by the holes.

  • The yard lines and the reefing lines.

The yard lines is fastened under the upper leech, through an eyelet and knoted over the yard with a sqare (or) reef knot. It is important to give the sail the right shape.

The reefing lines could be sewn fixed or as we have done, using cringles and then fix the line with a knot on both sides. At shortening of the sail should the reefing lines be knoted loose and with a slip knot. That gives you the possibillity to allways loosen the reef.

  • Last words.

There is furthermor many small details to considder when you make a sail construction. But this is enough too be able to construct a good enough sail. You can of corse do it other ways with most details but you have to keep the wholeness together if you are not gonna fail and make an unsailable sail.
